Most of his adult life has been spent with one foot there and one in England. His professions of writer and farmer were interrupted by ten years of soldiering - behind enemy lines in Abyssinia, and also in the Western Desert and the Far East, where he was taken prisoner by the Japanese while commanding a small guerrilla unit. He went straight from prison back to active service in Java, served on Lord Mountbatten's staff and, when the British forces withdrew from Java, remained behind as Military Attaché to the British Minister.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSince 1949 he has undertaken several official missions exploring little-known parts of Africa.
