The enclosed garden of the truth, Hakim Abul-Majd Majdūd ibn Ādam Sanā'ī Ghaznavi

This book was written by Sana'i of Ghazna (1118-1152). He frequented the courts of kings and associated with all the intelligentsia of the time. However, early in his life, he rejected this association and turned to the philosophy of the Sufis.

Gurdjieff was enthusiastic about this work. In The Teachers of Gurdjieff by Rafael Lefort on page 141, is found: "I remained in Peshawar for a month. During that time, I read and reread The Walled Garden of the Truth by Hakim Sana'i. It was a revelation. There it was chapter and verse, the basis of Gurdjieff's writings. If I had needed any other proof, this was it". Do not allow the Walled garden to Contuse you, for it was translated, also, as Enclosed Garden.

Sana'i's fame rested on this book. It is the best known of his works, and is the most esteemed in the East. Sana'i was the first to compose in this poetic form with religious intention. While he did devote a portion of this work to the interpretation of dreams, the main core of the work is the interpretation of the Sufi philosophy regarding prayer and the adoration of God.

Sana'i gives the reader a genuine taste of Sufi mysticism. There is great beauty in the over-all work. Many passages could easily be used as proverbs.
