40 Days, an account of a discipline, Abdullah Dougan
An account of Abdullah's striving from the unconscious to the conscious, showing his humble beginnings and insatiable thirst for knowledge. Once the teaching of G.I. Gurdjieff had impinged upon him he directed all his energies to the search and in his usual bulldozer fashion tried to push everything before him.
Under the guidance of C.S. Nott, author of Journal of a Pupil, he was made to stand on his own feet and appraise his situation. His enquiries led him to Afghanistan, where he was initiated as a Naqshibandi Sufi. There followed a period spent working with a group in New Zealand, then he was called to complete his obligations.
The 40-day fast on water alone undertaken by Abdullah while travelling in India and Afghanistan is narrated as a day-to-day unfolding of this discipline.
The book concludes with an objective account of the Muslim Hajj pilgrimage, with comments by Abdullah's two companions.
Cover: From a screen print by Abdullah, Death to the Ego.
