A history of Gnosticism by Giovanni Filoramo

The belief that matter, the body and its appetites are fundamentally evil is Gnostic. God created the spiritual sphere; the Devil made the earth and all its works. Gnosis, the secret knowledge of Gnostic initiates, is required for humankind to transcend physical being and to achieve spiritual salvation and resurrection. This account of the origins, history and influence of Gnosticism and Gnosis draws on new manuscript discoveries and presents convincing evidence that Gnostic beliefs still influence western and some branches of eastern thought and religion.

Gnosticism emerged in the second century as a powerful alternative to paganism and Christianity. Its explanation of the concurrent existence of a good god and a world of turmoil and change informed both Manicheism and Mithraism. The former spread from Persia to India, the latter throughout Europe. Even more importantly, perhaps, Gnostic doctrines profoundly affected Christian belief, resulting in the progression of dualist heresies, trom the Paulicians to the Bogomils, the Albigenses and the Cathars.

The secrecy surrounding Gnosticism and Gnosis has been a characteristic of its adherents and initiates through the centuries. Giovanni Filoramo has accomplished a task of considerable scholarly detection in writing what is by far the most complete account of the subject ever published.

Giovanni Filoramo is the author of many articles on Gnosticism and has written five books on the history of religions. He is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Turin.
