A History of Philosophy Volume II Mediaeval Philosophy Part 2 by Frederick Copleston
Albert the Great to Duns Scotus
In Mediaeval Philosophy, the second part of his complete history of philosophy, Father Frederick Copleston surveys the schools of Western thought from the Pa-tristic period and St. Augustine, through the Carolingian renaissance, St. Bonaventure and St. Thomas Aquinas to Duns Scotus. Displaying the same wide erudition, painstaking scholarship, and fine critical judgment evidenced in the first volume of this series (Greece and Rome), the author describes the gradual absorption of Greek philosophy by Christian theology.
This process, begun with the Platonic leanings of the Apologetic Fathers, is shown to have received a great impulse in the intellectual achievement of Augustine, reaching a climax in the imposing systems of the thirteenth century, particularly in the comprehensive synthesis of Aquinas. The contributions of such eminent philosophers as St. Justin Martyr, Clement, Origen, Boetius, Isidore, John Scotus Eriugena, St. Anselm, Averroes, Robert Grosseteste and St. Albert the Great are presented in their proper historical setting and traced to their doctrinal origins and filiations.
Although complete in itself, the two-volume Image Books edition of Mediaeval Philosophy is also an integral part of Father Copleston's multi-volume landmark in contemporary Catholic scholarship, A History of Philosophy.
