A History of Philosophy Volume III Late Mediaeval and Renaissance Philosophy Part 1

Ockham to the Speculative Mystics

Father Copleston's A HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY has already established itself as a standard work. Both its scope and lucidity of style make it an essential part of every library, and an invaluable and reliable guide to the student.

Greece and Rome, the first part of the series, surveyed the progress of philosophical thought from the Pre-Socratics to Neoplatonism. The second part, Mediaeval Philosophy:

Augustine to Scotus, traced the development of thought in the early Middle Ages culminating in the Thomistic synthesis of Aristotelian metaphysics and Christian revelation.

This, the third volume, considers the philosophy of the later Middle Ages and early Renaissance, analyzing in detail two main trends of thought. First, Father Copleston discusses the metaphysical basis of Thomism and the relation between philosophy and theology; and second, he examines the emergence of physical science as a separate discipline increasingly unconcerned with metaphysical implications. These themes are carefully traced through a close study of such individual thinkers as William of Ockham, Marsilius of Padua, Nicholas of Cusa, the speculative mystics (Tauler, Suso, Ruysbroeck), the political philosophers (Machiavelli, Thomas More, Jean Bodin, Crotius), Francis Bacon, and Francis Suárez.

"This third volume is characterized by the same discriminating selection of material, scholarly research, lucid exposition, and critical acumen that marked the first two volumes." Theological Studies
