A History of Philosophy Volume VII Modern Philosophy Part I Fichte to Hegel by Frederick Copleston

Fr. Frederick Copleston's widely respected and critically acclaimed A HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY has already established itself as "the standard history of philosophy for many years to come." (Blackfriars) His remarkable achievement of recording an organized history of Western thought has given his magnum opus monumental dimensions. This seventh volume, while complete in itself, also constitutes an integral part of Fr. Copleston's multi-volume HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY, and it continues the same high standard of excellence already set. In it Fr. Copleston examines the formidable complexities of the whole of nineteenth-century German philosophy, and once again produces an objective, lucid, judicious, and impartial study of this important and influential philosophical period.

It covers the entire range of philosophical opinion from Fichte through Nietzsche, studying their works in detail as well as those of Schelling, Hegel, and Schopenhauer. It also analyzes the transtormation of idealism in the thought of Marx and Feuerbach, and discusses the significance and impact of the Danish philosopher Kierkegaard. The concluding chapter considers the early development of twentieth-century systems which evolved principally through association with Husserl, Hartmann, and Heidegger; and reviews the rise of phenomenology.
