A history of Six Ideas by Wladyslaw Tatarkiewicz, First English Edition
In his previous book, the History of Aesthetics, W. Tatarkiewiez wrote about men, writers and artists who expressed their ideas concerning beauty, art, form and creativity. The present book returns to the same subject from a different point of view: it is a history of aesthetic questions, concepts and theories, from antiquity to the present day, and concerns a selection of writings about the successive conceptions of beauty and art, form and creativity. While the material in existence from the early part of history is restricted, thus allowing virtually all of it to be considered, this is not the case with more recent times: much happened in aesthetics from the 18th to the 20th century. It was only in that period that aesthetics achieved recognition as a separate science, received a name of its own and produced theories that early scholars had never dreamed of.
