De Adhortatio ad philosophiam of Protreptikos, die hier voor het eerst in het Nederlands verschijnt, is een geschrift van de grote neopla-tonicus lamblichos van Chalcis. Het is een voor het latere neoplatonisme (dat alle voorafgaande filosofische scholen tot een soort synthese probeerde te brengen) buitengewoon kenmerkende tekst.
In deze 'pythagoreische' aansporing tot een filosofisch leven brengt lamblichos stoïsche, platonische, aristotelische en magische elementen samen in een vurig pleidooi voor spirituele ascese als enige basis voor een hereniging van de ziel met haar eigenlijke bron. Daarmee laat de Adhortatio niet alleen op boeiende wijze zien hoe een filosofisch leven naar neoplatoonse snit gestalte zou moeten krijgen, maar vormt deze eveneens in meer algemene zin een uitstekende inleiding tot de wijsgerige en theosofische gedachtewereld van het latere neoplatonisme.
