Animals of the Church, in wood, stone and bronze, by T. Tindall Wildridge
T. Tindall Wildridge was one of many historians of the late nineteenth century whose eclectic interests and taste for first-hand investigation link directly back to the gentlemen antiquarians of a hundred years-or-more previously, such as William Stukely. Although such a 'holistic' approach is out of step with the current academic fashion for specialisation it cannot be denied that the thorough descriptions and accounts provided in their works have preserved much that might otherwise have been lost. We can, I hope, forgive them the errors of interpretation that arise from the limited knowledge then available.
This detailed collection on information on church carvings is one of the earliest discussions on the subject and deserves greater circulation and reinvestigation. It was originally published as one chapter of The Church Treasury, edited and published by William Andrews in 1898. The remainder of the book contains an equally rich collection of information; the chapter on Holy Wells by Cuming Walters has been reprinted as No.3 of the Hark back Editions series.
