Louis Gardet is een christelijk wijsgeer die zich bovendien op de studie van de islam en de Arabische wijsbegeerte en mystiek heeft toegelegd. Hij heeft langdurige reizen gemaakt naar Syrie, Libanon, Jordanie, Egypte en andere Noord-afrikaanse landen. Op verschillende plaatsen heeft hij voordrachten gehouden. Zijn voornaamste werken zijn: La pensée religieuse d'Avicenne, La cité musulmane, Expériences mystiques en terres non-chrétiennes; tezamen met C.G. Anawati: Introduction à la théologie musulmane en Mistica islamica.
Hij redigeert met prof. E. Gilson de reeks Etudes musulmanes en is medewerker aan de Encyclopédie de l'Islam en aan diverse wetenschappelijke tijdschriften op het gebied van de filosofie en de studie van de islam.
