Demonology Sympathetic Magic and Witchcraft, J.N. Friend

Dr Friend's book is a wide-ranging miscellany of quotations, historical references, personal experience, and general information concerning customs, traditions and legends handed down from past ages and based sometimes on fact, sometimes on fancy, or springing from the belief in the direct intervention of supernatural agencies in human affairs, or simply rooted in magical practices.

Though not primarily intended for the serious student of folklore, this book will appeal to everyone interested in the cultural development of mankind, as well as to the average reader who is curious about the whys and wherefores of superstition

Dr. Friend outlines its history against a background of scientific progress, with a wealth of illustrative examples drawn from every age and many lands.

Has the diamond special virtues besides its rarity and brilliance? Is the "eyed flint" lucky (like the four-leaved clover) the opal unlucky? Whence the markings on a donkey's shoulders? How did nickel get its name? Do mascots and amulets bring advantage?

The traditional answers to such questions, collected in these pages, if not always convincing, at least give food for thought.
