Folk Songs of Ghana by J.H. Kwabena Nketia

This volume of folk songs of Ghana is the first of a projected series designed to provide source material for performers, composers, and students of African music. It is the outcome of a program of research in African Studies being undertaken at the University of Ghana.

In this first volume the items have been limited mainly to a few categories of songs from one major language area in Ghana -the Akan area. The material is in four sections, each containing examples of songs of one musical type.

The scores of each musical type are preceded by an introduction in which the social background, distinctive structural features, type of accompaniment, manner of performance, poetry and features of movement are all discussed.
