G.R.S. Mead and the Gnostic quest, edited and introduced by Clare Goodrick-Clarke & Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke

By recovering the ancient texts of the Western esoteric tradition, George Robert Stowe Mead (1863-1933) had a formative influence on twentieth-century art, literature, and psychology. He opened the door to the arcane knowledge seized upon by such writers and poets as Ezra Pound, W.B. Yeats, Hermann Hesse, and Robert Duncan. His passionate engagement with Gnosticism profoundly influenced Carl Gustav Jung's psychoanalysis and provided the esoteric sources of his theory of archetypes and the collective unconscious. Initially a leading member of the Theosophical Society founded by Helena Blavatsky, G.R.S. Mead later founded the Quest Society. His search for a universal theosophy led from the nineteenth-century occult revival to the flowering of esoteric ideas in modern culture. Besides promoting a wider public interest in Gnostic and Hermetic writings, his pioneering studies made an important contribution to the study of comparative religion.

This volume of the Western Esoteric Masters Series combines a substantial biographical essay on G.R.S. Mead with an annotated anthology of his most important writings, giving the reader both a contextualizing overview and representative samples from Mead's large body of work.
