Himalayan Kingdoms, Jaroslav Poncar

'Jaroslav Poncar was born in Prague in 1945. He now lives in Cologne, where he was professor for Photo Engineering and Media Technology at the University of the Applied Sciences from 1973 to 2003. Presently he is working at the Institute of Applied Optics and Electronics. His countless, photographically motivated travels have usually taken him to the Himalayas and Tibet, to Central Asia, India and Cambodia. Since 1976 he has developed an especial preference for panorama photography. In 1985, he was the first European to cross Tibet from East to West. The following year he spent many months with Tibetan nomads. And in 1987 together with a team he explored the region where the Indus, Brahmaputra, Sutlej and Karnali rivers all originate. His various publications, such as "Ladakh - Land of the High Passes", "Tibet - Gateway to Heaven" and "Alchi-Ladakh's Hidden Buddhist Sanctuary" all attest to his great knowledge as a renowned expert on the Himalayas. As a member of the German Apsara Conservation Project he is currently in charge of the truly comprehensive photographic documentation of Angkor Wat in Cambodia as part of the UNESCO program for the preservation of Angkor. The photo books "Tibet" and "India" have been published in the Edition Panorama Bibliothek, which has already won the DDC-Award, the Red Dot Award of the Design-Centre North Rhine-Westphalia and the iF Communication Design Award. Edition Panorama also published his photo books "Angkor- a photographic portrait", "Of Gods, Kings and Men", "Burma" and "Himalayas", which won the German Photobook Award.
