In the dark places of wisdom by Peter Kingsley
A century of studies on Parmenides has established that his is the single most important text of pre-Platonic philosophy in ancient Greece; but it also seems nearly to have exhausted the possibilities of interpretation. Yet Peter Kingsley embarks on a surprisingly new and original approach to the man. Starting from the outside - with the history of Greek colonization and with the city of Velia, Parmenides home in southern Italy - he begins to encircle a fascinating centre.
The famous introduction to Parmenides poem is brought into direct contact with a series of archacological discoveries made at Velia: discoveries that include evidence for a succession of pholarchoi or "leaders of the den" in the retinue of Parmenides and for a "seer-doctor" or iatromantis associated with the god Apollo. This leads into an ambiance of ecstasy, shamanism, journeys to the underworld, magic, medicine, and Pythagoreanism.
The book includes a wealth of suggestions and observations hardly ever noticed before regarding details such as the biographical intormation about how a certain Ameinias led Parmenides to "quiet" or "silence", evidently in a mystical sense. In this way the philosophical and mystical roots of Western civilization start to appear in a new light."
