Karl Marx and Religion in Europe and India by Trevor Ling

Karl Marx has had an important bearing on methods of study in history and sociology, two of the major disciplines used in the study of religion. Marxism has been regarded as a religion (rightly or wrongly) by a considerable number of scholars. These two factors explain why the study of religion should include some study of Marxism.

In this book Professor Ling looks at Marx's attitude to religion in Europe and provides a description of the historical background. He then examines Marx's attitude to religion in India (about which Marx wrote during the 1850s) and discusses Weber's sociology of religion in relation to that of Marx. There is also a discussion of the state of Indian religion in the nineteenth century. The book concludes by considering the significance of notable figures such as Sri Aurobindo Ghose in relation to Marx.

Designed for both student and general reader, this volume provides historical links between the various references to religion made by Karl Marx and sets the Indian and European references in a comparative framework.
