Karmapa the Black Hat Lama of Tibet, compiled by Nik Douglas & Meryl White
Karmapa the Black Hat Hierarch of Tibet, has been honoured as a Living Buddha in his sixteen successive incarnations. Traditionally the coming of the first Karmapa fulfilled a prophecy made by Lord Buddha that this emanation of the Compassionate Saviour would appear in the world in order to alleviate the sufferings of humanity in the Dark Age of materialism.
The Extraordinary Karmapa life-stories, compiled from authentic Tibetan biographies and diaries, tell of the spread of mystic spirituality in the regions of Tibet, China, Mongolia, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim, and also incorporate the ancient esoteric transmission from India. One thousand years ago in Eastern India, Tantric teachings were originally revealed to a Yogi called Tilopa. From him a lineage was unfolded which found expression as the Kargyudpa sect.
The sixteen life stories of the Karmapas, told here for the first time in English, cover eight hundred years of events of great cultural and historical importance. In various incarnations the Karmapa Lamas became the Teachers of Emperors and Kings, notably the Mongol Emperor Kublai Khan, Emperor Toghon Temur, Emperor Yung-Lo, Emperor Wu Tsung, and many of the great Kings of Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim. He also initiated Je songkhapa, founder of the Gelupa sect, of which the Dalai Lamas became Hierarchs.
The Karmapa Lamas established many important monasteries and hermitages in Tibet and surrounding countries. They were famous as great artists and sculptors, whose unique style, known as Karma-Khadri, is the most highly considered school of art in Tibet.
The present sixteenth incarnation of Karmapa, His Holiness Rangjung Rige Dorje, was born in Eastern Tibet. In 1959 due to the Chinese invasion, he took refuge in Sikkim, where he founded a large monastic centre. Through his enthusiasm and generosity this important work
has come into being. In his introductory message he expresses the hope that people of all nations will read the book.
