Logical Investigations by Gottlob Frege
Edited with a preface by P. T. Geach
Translated by P. T. Geach and R. H. Stoothoff
The three articles translated in this volume were published by Frege in the periodical Beiträge zur Philosophie des deutschen Idealismus, the first two in 1918 and the last one in 1923. They were intended as chapters of a book, to be called Logische Untersuchungen, which Frege never finished. The present title is a translation of that title.
English translations of all three articles- "Thoughts' (Der Gedanke), Negation (Die Verneinung), and "Compound Thoughts' (Gedankengefüge) - have been published separately elsewhere but have never before been included within one volume, as intended by Frege. P. T. Geach's translation of Der Gedanke is new. Geach's translation of Die Verneinung and Professor Stoothoff's translation of Gedankengefüge have been revised in order to standardize Frege's terminology according to conventions being adopted for future editions of Frege's work.
P. T. Geach is Professor of Logic at the University of Leeds.
R. H. Stoothoff is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
