Maurice Nicoll, A portrait by Beryl Pogson

Trained by C.G. Jung, Maurice Nicoll was one of the earliest and most influential teachers of the Fourth Way. After meeting P.D. Ouspensky in 1921, he spent a year at the Château du Prieuré, Fontainebleau, with G.I. Gurdjieff. He continued his studies with Ouspensky until 1931, when he was authorized to teach Gurdjieff's system. He carried on this teaching until his death in 1953.

In Maurice Nicoll; A Portrait, Beryl Pogson, who was Dr. Nicoll's secretary for fourteen years, has chiefly emphasized the events which had the most meaning for Dr. Nicoll.

She describes Nicoll's personal life and methods of teaching, tells how he came to write the Psychological commentaries, establishes the course of his relationships with Gurdjieff and Ouspensky, and sheds new light on his religious studies.

Mrs. Pogson gives us a book with the essence of the man, one which is certain to be of interest to the increasingly wide circle of readers of Dr. Nicoll's works: The Mark, The New Man, Living Time, and his five-volume Psychological Commentaries on the Teaching of G.I. Gurdjieff and P.D. Ouspensky.

"A biography by a devoted pupil and private secretary of Nicoll, rich in personal detail and reminiscences. The most detailed published account of Nicoll's life as a student and teacher of the Gurdjieff work."

-J. Walter Driscoll
