Merlin Dreams by Peter Dickinson illustrated by Alan Lee
Years, centuries pass. The rock does not change, but the moor round it changes. Now, if you crossed the moor you would not know that the rock was there. It is, and so is he.
Entombed beneath that massive rock, his extraordinary powers at rest, the Magician we have come to call Merlin drifts between sleep and consciousness.
And he dreams, each dream creating from its Celtic roots a remarkable world of mediaeval fantasy. An unwilling knight errant rides against a daunting, invisible opponent... A King loses his kingdom through misrule, but finds unexpected help from a young girl... A damsel uses her ancestral magic to avenge her father's untimely death. Floating in and out of dream, deep in his secret chamber, lies Merlin.
Peter Dickinson has created a masterpiece of storytelling. The individual tales seem to rise from their dark but potent origins and breathe the bright air of Arthurian legend to stunning imaginative effect. Alan Lee's exquisite colour and black-and-white illustrations embody all the moods and subtleties of the text.
