Muntu by Janheinz Jahn

Jahn portrays for the Western reader the whole range of traditional and new African thought expressed in religion, language, philosophy, literature, art, music, and dance. He tells what happens in the encounter between Christian and African cultures, using these examples to introduce the underlying principles of African philosophy.

In their clash with the West, the traditional African cultures are evolving into an independent culture of equal standing with others, rather than a form of expression of "black Europeans." Muntu (which means "humanity") by describing the direction which African culture is taking, opens the door to an understanding of the forces in ferment in Africa, and the impact of tin forces on the Western world. (From the back cover)

While this landmark book claims to define the 'African culture' modern readers should note that it generalizes a massive, diverse continent. It focuses primarily on the philosophy, language, and spiritual traditions of the Bantu-speaking peoples of Central and East Africa. Written during the decolonization era, Muntu was a revolutionary attempt to push back against colonial prejudices by proving that African traditions possess deeply sophisticated intellectual, philosophical, and artistic systems. It remains a fascinating piece of 20th-century intellectual history.
