Tertium organum. A key to the Enigmas of the world, P.D. Ouspensky
Ouspensky is both a mathematician and a mystic, and with the cold logic of the one and the inspired vision of the other he formulates a philosophy based upon the mathematical concept popularly known as the Fourth Dimension. By means of it he builds a bridge between Western rationalism and Eastern mysticism.
According to Ouspensky, the dimensionality of space corresponds with the development of consciousness. He would define the fourth dimension as the fourth form of the manifestation of consciousness - the intuitional. This higher, or 'cosmic', consciousness, at the threshold of which humanity now stands, demands a new logic, something beyond that of Aristotle and of Bacon. Hence the title Tertium Organum, the new canon of thought.
This is the first important work to deal with the New Mathematics and the Theory of Relativity from the standpoint of philosophy. It is profound, simple, bold, provocative - a work of genius.
The Author
P.D. Ouspensky (1878-1947) was born in Moscow. His books Tertium Organum (written 1912) and A New Model of the Universe (written 1914) revealed his stature as a thinker and his deep preoccupation with the problems of man's existence. His meeting with Gurdjieff in 1915 marked a turning point in his life, and his interest from this time centred on the practical study of methods for development of consciousness in man. It is to those that In Search of the Miraculous and The Fourth Way refer.
