Who is the Alshich?

Rabbi Moshe Alshich, one of the most profound and inspiring commentators on the Tanach, lived four hundred years ago (1508-1600). He was one of the most gifted students of Rabbi Yosef Karo and the revered teacher of Rabbi Chaim Vital. Since that time, the illuminating commentaries of the Alshich have taken pride of place on the bookshelves of every Jewish library. His monumental works have been hailed by the Sages as ranking among the greatest expositions ever written on the Scriptures. They not only expound the most complicated passages in the Bible, but they also clarify and discuss fundamental questions of faith and Jewish belief. Culled from traditional and kabbalistic sources which are woven into his own original insights, the Alshich's commentaries broadened the perspective of Torah studies for all time.

The Alshich's archaic language and elaborate figures of speech, however, have made it difficult for the modern reader to reap the full benefit of his brilliant scholarship, and consequently there has been a decline in the study of his writings in recent times. In order to restore the popularity of his work, we present an original translation of the Alshich's commentary on the Book of Koheleth (Ecclesiastes) in clear and readable English. With an explanatory foreword, a biographical sketch and an expository essay which sheds light on the main subjects discussed in the commentary, this volume seeks to expand the spectrum of readers who can appreciate the Alshich's greatness.
