The Gospels, fact, myth or legend? By J.P. Arenzen, Ph.D.

These essays first appeared as articles in the Catholic Gazette in the years 1918-1923, and the author thanks the editors for permission to reprint. They have been but slightly modified in form and in one instance considerably enlarged. Answers to correspondence, which arose out of the articles, have been embodied in a few Notes.

The author wishes to thank Father A. B. Sharpe, M.A., for his kindness in helping him to remove certain unevennesses of style. The purpose of this volume is to render the Gospels credible to the average educated person, who is not a specialist in first-century history. The first part aims at this purpose directly, the second part indirectly by showing that New Testament times are in the full light of history, and though twenty centuries distant from us, none the less some of the best known to us.

The added Essay on the use of the Bible wishes to recall the reader to that sound view of the relation between the Written Word and the Church, which alone makes Holy Writ truly profitable to the faithful. - J. P. A. - January 1923.
