The hidden tradition, Women's spiritual writings rediscovered, edited by Lavinia Byrne

"My hope is that this book will be well read and, above all, enjoyed. Use it to pray with. Use it as a starting point for your own reflection. Write down your own thoughts and prayers. Be inspired by what you read and share it with your friends. In this way the tradition will gain new life and vitality as it inspires contemporary women and men in their search for God.' Lavinia Byrne, from the Preface.

Women have been writing authoritatively about their experience of God for centuries. This anthology is drawn from many different Christian traditions, from medieval mystics such as Hildegard of Bingen to twentieth-century writers such as Dorothy Sayers and Edith Stein, from letters, diaries and private journals as well as from published works. It reveals the extraordinary depth and richness of women's relationship with God, and will enable present-day women to place themselves in a continuing tradition for a long time hidden, now brought magnificently to light.

Lavinia Byrne is a member of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Associate Secretary for the Community of Women and Men in the Church at the Council of Churches for Britain and Ireland. The author of Women before God and Sharing the Vision: Creative En- counters between Religious and Lay Life, both published by SPCK, she is involved in lecturing, writing and broadcasting.
