The author, now elderly, has from an early age wished for a proof of the reality of God. So intense became this longing that, at the age of eighteen, she determined to persevere in prayer until this invisible Being responded. She continued till exhaustion, and in the pause that resulted found herself in a state of receptivity which her efforts had previously prevented. It was then that she heard her inner teacher. Thereafter she wrote down the instructions given as she followed the inner teaching, while carrying on the active external life demanded of the wife of a Member of Parliament.

The following is an extract from the opening pages: "Now this preparation consists in emptying your mind of all preconceived notions whatsoever, not habitually, but as a willing and intentional preparation for the lesson. You must endeavour to be inwardly literally naked and transparent--wholly exposed to God before Whom, by this act of worship, you stand. Unless you do this thing your mind cannot be led to things to which it is totally unaccustomed, and yet the substance of these lessons, whilst old to your actual experience, will be new and sometimes shocking to your conscious mind. I wish you to realise that unless you can really trust me you cannot do this work with me. To fear exploitation would utterly prevent it."
