The road awaits by Peter Lanham

The road Awaits is a tragedy, the story, in the Greek classical tradition, of the life and downfall of a man, and of the working of that 'divinity which shapes our ends, rough-hew them how we will'. Peter Lanham who in distinguished collaboration with the Basuto Chieftain, A. S. Mopeli-Paulus, wrote Blanket Boy's Moon, tells here of an Englishman, Richard King, and of his friendship, soon to turn to enmity and bitter hatred, with Piet Corneels, an Afrikaner of fanatically Nationalist convictions. At each crisis in King's life, Piet is present, standing by, watching with mocking and baleful eyes, while the fates wreak their worst on a man of good intentions, loyal, trustworthy, but doomed. This moving story reflects in the lives of two men, the awkward ambivalent relationship of Englishman and Afrikaner in South Africa.
