The Way within, with an introduction by Kenneth Walker, Wyatt Rawson

This book records the experiences of a number of men and women whose lives have been changed by becoming aware of 'the other self' and its constructive as well as destructive possibilities. By means chiefly of dream interpretation they have sought to bridge the gulf that normally separates our conscious life from the unconscious roots upon which it rests. The accounts here given were recorded over the years and include exchanges of letters which show the author acting as 'guide, philosopher and friend'. The book is unusual in that it gives intimate details of the gradual process by which those concerned have reached a new stage of maturity through a more realistic evaluation of their instinctive drives and higher aspirations. They have allowed the publication of these private records in the belief that they will be of help to others faced with similar difficulties.

Many of the problems dealt with are common to us all, such as outbursts of irrational irritation, dislike of one's colleagues, nagging tendencies and so on. Others are more particular, such as an unrecognized assumption of male superiority, the inability to enter into a full love relationship because of former experiences, trouble owing to paranormal faculties, and difficulties due to temperament and hospitalisation as a child.

In a last section the author explains the methods used and gives examples of the technique of depth psychology groups. His conclusions are that our dream world is as much of a reality and a force as our waking life. The way within is a road along which we are all travelling whether we know it or not. But to be conscious of what we are experiencing adds a new dimension to our lives and gives us additional strength when we seek to advance in understanding and in love.

The author studied philosophy and psychology at Cambridge University both before and after the first world war and had a short Freudian analysis. He then became a teacher and educationist, and for the last eight years has been engaged in the psychological work here described.
