Tyro on the Trucial coast by Julian Walker | 1st Edition 1999 Published by the Memoir Club
Tyro On The Trucial Coast is the fascinating story of the early life of a diplomat posted to the Middle East in the 1950s.
At that time the Trucial Coast consisted of a string of poverty stricken settlements fringing the silted up creeks on the southern shore of the Persian Gulf. It was a time before they had public electricity, telephones or a road system. Now, less than half a century later, the Coast has been transformed into the United Arab Emirates, with high rise buildings, six lane highways, and several major airports.
Now known internationally for its wealth and as a centre for business and tourism, the Trucial Coast the author encountered as a very green diplomat was very different. He recalls a time when piracy, assassination and mutiny were not unknown, and tribal clashes and slavery commonplace. However, it is a land of warm hospitality and the author's charming account of his adventures shows his great fondness for the country and its people.
