A History of Philosophy Volume VI Modern Philosophy Part 2 Kant by Frederick Copleston
The scholarship, lucidity, and readability of Fr. Copleston's monumental survey of the entire field of philosophy in the Western world have merited the highest praise from critic and scholar alike. In this volume, Father Copleston takes up the 18th century Continental philosophers. Beginning with
"The French Enlightenment", he surveys the work of Bayle, Fontenelle, Vauvenargues, Condillac, Helvétius, Montes-quieu, together with the Encyclopédistes, the earlier materialists such as LaMettrie and d'Holbach, philosophers of natural history such as Buffon and Robinet, and the Physiocrats. Rousseau is treated individually with two chapters devoted to his philosophical teachings. Father Copleston then goes on to cover "The German Enlightenment" which includes the work of Lessing; Wolff and his followers, the various theories of education and psychology, and Deism.
Following this section is a discussion of Bossuet, Vico, Voltaire and Herder. The last half of the work is devoted to. an intensive treatment of Immanuel Kant. Following a general section on his life and works, Fr. Copleston then examines the whole philosophy of Kant developing the study step by step as it evolved within Kant himself, and concludes with a lucid and cogent analysis of his impact on 19th and 20th century philosophers.
This volume continues the high standards of the series and is a genuine and welcome contribution to it.
