Venture to the interior by Laurens van der Post

Laurens van der Post was born in South Africa in 1906. Most of his adult life has been spent with one foot there and one in England. His professions of writer and farmer were interrupted by ten years of soldiering - behind enemy lines in Abyssinia, and also in the Western Desert and the Far East, where he was taken prisoner by the Japanese while commanding a small guerrilla unit. He went straight from prison back to active service in Java, served on Lord Mountbatten's staff and, when the British forces withdrew from Java, remained behind as Military Attaché to the British Minister.

Since 1949 he has undertaken several official missions exploring little-known parts of Africa. His independent expedition to the Kalahari Desert in search of the Bushmen was the subject of his book The Lost World of the Kalahari. His other books include The Face Beside the Fire (1953), Flamingo Feather (1955) and The Dark Eye in Africa (1955).
